A Day to think

Republic day holds a special meaning to Indians and tells us all about each and every struggle of Indian freedom. Republic day stands for the right of the people of India to govern the country by themselves. It is celebrated by organizing a big event with special parade at the Rajpath.

"Where the mind is without fear and where the head is held high"- Rabindranath Tagore

A huge parade is held in the honour of the nation before the President of India. It is a dream for a soldier to walk in uniform with a sword in his hand. Oh! What a feeling it is to hear the 'tak, tak, tak' sound made by hundreds of army men in boots. It's quite overwhelming as your heart swells with pride.

Do you think the value of Republic day is recognized by the today's generation? Just give a thought about what you do on 26th January. The best possible method of serving the country today is spreading peace and harmony, following laws and not allowing crime to happen. Republic day can also be celebrated for national interest to abolish corruption in our country.

At present, our country is dealing with lots of problems, chief among them, is corruption. we are accountable citizens of our country so let's make a resolution that from today on wards, every action on our part will awaken the sense of patriotism in me as well as those around.

These days have become marketing gimmicks for brands to sell their products, I have seen so many Indian flags and other things people carelessly buy for a day being trampled upon when their use is over. We should pause for a moment to think, understand and respect the sacrifice of all those leaders, who have given us our present and hope for a bright future.

Jai Hind.

Election Fever

With the 16th general elections coming ahead, every party is busy to raise their flag as high as they can. Media is working on the exit polls, airing big fights and debates to increase their TRPs. Farmers and daily labours gave a short break for their work to campaign with the party members. Of course, they are getting good pay package from each party. Senior citizens are debating on – is it BJP or Congress or AAP or something else who is going to rule our 1.2 billion people… This summer is heating up more with the election fever everywhere.

Election manifesto is the key thing in any election campaign. Parties are working hard on their manifestos to woo the voters. Sometime ago, I heard that in Tamilnadu, a party’s manifesto include ‘free color TV’ for every family. In A.P. a party has come up with Rs.1000 salary/month to the economically backward families in their manifesto. Isn't it crazy! whatever, the party needs votes and get into the seat to rule.

To catch-up this heat, I tried a small activity on ‘Elections’ with the middle school pupils of Red Cross Govt Girls High School at Masab Tank, Hyd. Each student has to come up with a unique party name, symbol and manifesto to contest in the elections.
Here are some nominees -

Name: Sirisha
Class: 7
Party name: M.G. Party
Party symbol: Tree
Manifesto: Free electricity for every family, provides pensions for senior citizens, jobs for 10th pass pupils, free medical treatment for the poor, scholarships for the economically backward.

Name: Keerthi Priya
Class: 7
Party name: Praja Yudham (Public War)
Party symbol: Girl and boy symbol
Manifesto: Mineral water supply for every family. A cycle for every student to go to school. Special act on girl protection. Free education in private schools. One TV per family. Will stop corruption and ban alcohol.

Name: Zaitoon
Class : 7
Party name: Rythu Seva (Farmers service)
Party symbol: Rice
Manifesto: Free houses, medicines, education, a salary of Rs.200/month to farmers.

Name: Nikitha
Class : 7
Party name: Please save plant
Party symbol: Plant
Manifesto: Free - ration, drinking water supply, electricity, admission, bags & books for the poor. Renovate roads and maintain it regularly.

Name: G. Pooja
Class: 7
Party name: Water party
Party symbol: Rose
Manifesto: Free rice, 11 hours electricity for farmers, free jobs, a salary of Rs.5000/month to the economically backward families.

Every contestant is wooing their voter with freebies. Obviously, Indian mentality has tuned to Free goods, subsidized services, reservations for caste and creed etc etc. We see our country's progress until or unless our rigid mind set transforms.

Education For Free team wishes every nominee a big luck! Public will decide the fate of each candidate.
Cast your vote for a better governance.
Happy vote day to all the citizens of India.

Read India

What do you present a kid on his/her birthday? A doll, a playing kit, an automated toy etc. If you ask me, I would definitely suggest books as the best option to gift. Indeed, the competitions or quizzes we organize on behalf of EFF, we prefer to gift books rather than items or trophies since we have observed pupils in the rural as well as in urban areas are largely unable to afford books apart from those prescribed in their academic courses.
Reading is the best way to acquire a language. Students from underprivileged and middle classes in our country are distributed free text books by the government of India. Therefore, they have access to their text books. We have many students in the nation who crave to read more. Unfortunately, many schools have no libraries and those which do have them lack good collections of attractive books. On the other hand, modernization and access to information on the internet has adversely affected the importance of libraries both in rural and urban areas. Then how can we quench the thirst of reading in students belong to economically backward classes?

To develop reading skills in students a NGO named ‘Pratham books’ has come forward with a noble cause – ‘a book in every child’s hand’.

About Pratham Books:

At Pratham Books, we believe that every child has the right to enjoy good books.  And we believe they should have stories set in surroundings familiar to them and in a language close to their culture. We believe that to make books accessible to every child, the price points have to be very low. Pratham Books is a brand of story books as Indian as the children who read them. As a not-for-profit publisher, our dream is to see a country where every child wants to read, is able to read, and has something good to read.

some cover pages of the online books

Thank you Pratham Books : )
We EFF team are grateful to Pratham books, who gave us access to their online titles. The books are nicely designed with attractive illustrations that will appeal to any age group. Simple language, fewer lines in paragraphs, good story line and great quality slides which draw the students interest. Currently, we’re using online story slides converting it to ppt to show in the virtual classroom. Vernacular medium students found it very easy to read with fascinating pictures. The stories depict the typical Indian family background and culture.
